Free Online Character Counter
Count characters and letters online with or without spaces. Perfect for Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, SEO meta tags, and any character-limited content.
What is a Character Counter?
A character counter is an online tool that counts the total number of characters in your text — including letters, numbers, punctuation marks, spaces, and special characters. Our free online character counter shows both character counts clearly: characters with spaces (total characters including all whitespace) and characters without spaces (letters, numbers, and punctuation only).
This distinction matters because different platforms, contexts, and use cases require different counting methods:
- Twitter/X counts characters including spaces (280-character limit)
- Meta descriptions are measured in pixel width but roughly 155–160 characters is the safe limit
- Academic work sometimes specifies character limits excluding spaces
- SMS messages count every character including spaces (160 per standard SMS)
Our character counter is also a letter counter — perfect for when you need to know exactly how many letters (alphabetic characters) appear in your text, separate from numbers and punctuation.
Common uses for our character counter:
- Writing tweets and social media posts within platform limits
- Crafting SEO meta titles (50–60 characters) and meta descriptions (150–160 characters)
- Checking Google Ads headlines (30 characters) and descriptions (90 characters)
- Counting characters for email subject lines (40–50 characters recommended)
- Academic assignments with character-based limits
- Programming and technical writing with specific length requirements
- App store descriptions and product listings with character limits
The tool works entirely in your browser with no downloads, no sign-up, and no limits on how much text you can analyze. It is the fastest, most reliable free character count tool online.
How to Use Our Character Counter
Type or paste your text into the editor above and the character count updates instantly. The Core Counts panel on the right shows Characters (with spaces) and Characters (no spaces) in clearly labeled fields so you always know exactly which count you are looking at.
For social media writing, expand the Platform Character Limits section below the editor. You will see visual progress bars for Twitter, Instagram captions, Instagram bio, LinkedIn posts, YouTube titles, and other platforms. When a bar turns orange, you are approaching the limit. When it turns red, you have exceeded that platform's character limit.
For SEO work, use the meta description count (aim for 150–160 characters) and meta title count (50–60 characters) to optimize your page titles and descriptions before publishing.
Tips for using the character counter effectively:
- Use the Copy button to copy your text after editing it to fit within a platform's character limit
- The sidebar also shows your full word count, sentence count, and paragraph count alongside the character count
- If you need to reduce character count quickly, use our Readability Checker to identify unnecessarily long words you can simplify
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between characters with spaces and without spaces?
Characters with spaces counts every single character in your text, including spaces between words, tabs, and line breaks. Characters without spaces excludes all whitespace characters. Twitter counts characters including spaces; some academic contexts require characters excluding spaces.
What is Twitter's character limit?
Twitter (now X) has a character limit of 280 characters per tweet for standard accounts. This includes letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and emojis. URLs are always counted as 23 characters regardless of actual length.
What is Instagram's character limit?
Instagram allows up to 2,200 characters per post caption and 150 characters for your bio. Only the first 125 characters of a caption appear before the 'more' cut-off in feeds, so front-load your most important content.
What is the ideal meta description length in characters?
Google displays meta descriptions up to approximately 155–160 characters on desktop. Keep meta descriptions between 120–158 characters to avoid truncation in search results. Our character counter makes it easy to hit this range precisely.
Do emojis count as one character?
Most simple emojis count as 2 characters due to Unicode encoding (they use multiple bytes). Complex emojis made from multiple code points can count as more. Twitter, for example, counts most emojis as 2 characters. Our counter shows the raw character count including emoji length.
Can I check multiple platform limits at once?
Yes! Expand the Platform Character Limits section below the editor to see your text measured against all major platform limits simultaneously — Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, and more.
Is this tool a letter counter too?
Yes. 'Letter counter' and 'character counter' are often used interchangeably. While technically letters are only alphabetic characters (A–Z), our counter shows the total character count which you can use to understand your letter and character distribution.
